Medical experts have recently warned that carbonated and energy drinks may contribute to hair loss, particularly among young men. As the prevalence of hair loss increases in this demographic, new research suggests that these beverages could be a major factor exacerbating both hair thinning and anxiety.

According to the Daily Mail on the 26th (local time), Dr. Nina Chandrasekaran, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist based in Florida, cautioned that carbonated and energy drinks could accelerate hair loss and anxiety symptoms in men.

“These drinks contain high amounts of sugar and additives, which can disrupt hormonal balance,” Dr. Chandrasekaran explained. “Excessive caffeine content increases the stress hormone cortisol, while excessive sugar intake impairs blood circulation, weakens hair follicles, and triggers inflammation.”

She further warned that the combination of high cortisol levels and sugar can worsen anxiety and overstimulate the nervous system, ultimately intensifying hair loss. “If you notice your hair becoming thinner, falling out more frequently, or experiencing increased anxiety, cutting back on sugary and caffeinated beverages may help,” she advised.

Study Finds Threefold Increase in Hair Loss Risk Among Frequent Soda Drinkers

A 2023 study conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University in China found that young men who consumed sugary drinks more than seven times per week had more than three times the risk of hair loss compared to those who did not.

The study observed 1,000 men aged 18 to 45 over four months, analyzing their consumption of sugary drinks and hair loss patterns. Researchers also conducted animal experiments, confirming that excessive sugar intake can impair metabolic function, disrupt normal follicle regeneration, and hinder hair growth.

Experts Urge Caution in Interpreting Results

Despite these findings, some experts emphasize the need for cautious interpretation of the results.

Dr. Susan Massick, a dermatologist at Ohio State University, stated, “While diet plays a significant role in overall health, male pattern baldness is a multifactorial condition that cannot be attributed to a single cause.” She added, “It is difficult to definitively conclude that sugary drinks alone directly cause male pattern baldness.”

Although hair loss is commonly associated with aging, more young men are experiencing early-onset hair thinning, leading some to opt for costly hair transplant procedures.

Statistics show that approximately 25% of men in their 20s experience hair loss, and by the age of 50, about 85% of men will have some degree of hair thinning.

Understanding Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common type of hair loss in men, affecting an estimated 40-50% of men worldwide. It is characterized by a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, eventually forming a U-shaped balding pattern on the top of the head.

This type of hair loss is influenced by genetic factors and male hormones (androgens), leading to progressive and often irreversible damage to hair follicles.

Preventing Hair Loss Through a Healthy Lifestyle

To prevent hair loss, experts recommend a well-balanced diet and adequate nutrient intake. Reducing the consumption of carbonated and sugary beverages may help lower the risk of hair thinning. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management can contribute to overall hair health and well-being.
